Part 1 - Introduction by Beate Forbiger
Beate Forbiger My name is Beate Forbriger. I work as project assistant at the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF) Office in São Paulo, Brazil, and I am Alumna of the International Academy for Leadership (IAF) of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom in Gummersbach, Germany.
During my last stay at the Academy in June 2010 attending the IAF seminar about strategic planning, the Director of the IAF, Ms. Birgit Lamm, asked me if I would like to organize a “Brazilian-Special” for the Website of the FNF in the run-up to the elections on 3rd October 2010 in Brazil. The idea was to give members of the IAF-Alumni-Network and other interested persons from all over the world a briefing about the next elections in Brazil from the personal point of view of some of our IAF-Alumni from Brazil.
Birgit Lamm Of course, I liked Birgit's idea very much! So, back to Brazil, I instantaneously asked some of our IAF-Alumni if they would like to participate with a short contribution in English. They immediately agreed to take part. The task of the authors was to give first a short presentation about themselves, than to inform about a specify topic with regard to the elections in Brazil and finally to inform about their personal involvement in the election campaign, if there is one.
In Brazil the main political liberal counterpart of the FNF is the Youth Organization of the Democrats (“Juventude Democartas”). In preparation of the Brazilian elections the FNF trained the members of the “Juventude Democartas”, among other things, in strategic planning, the use of modern electronic communication tools in politics and in building and preserving the image of liberal politicians.
Many of the young liberal leaders of the “Juventude Democratas” already participated in a seminar at the IAF of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom in Gummersbach, Germany. Some of them have been nominated as candidates, others are involved in campaign organizations or some kind of campaign supports.
Efraim Filho | Blog of Priscila Krause I would like to name here only some of the candidates who are in close contact with the FNF. For example: Efraim Filho, the National President of the liberal Youth Organization and Federal Deputy of the Democrats, who is a candidate for re-election; Marcelo Schrubbe, the Regional President of the “Juventude Democrats” in the State of Santa Catarina and City Councillor in Blumenau, who is running for Federal Deputy; Priscila Krause, City Councillor of the “Juventude Democratas” in Recife in the Pernambuco State and Marcelo Queiroz, one of the main leaders of the “Juventude Democratas” in the city of Rio de Janeiro, who are both running for State Legislator and, finally, Max da Mata, the Regional President of the “Juventude Democratas” in the State of Espírito Santos, who is running for Vice-Governor in his home state. All of them are IAF-Alumni or took part in FNF-study trips to Germany!
See, for example, the different modern communication tools used by the candidate Marcelo Schrubbe, a big fan of the internet:, in his campaign:
Twibbon of M. Schrubbe
Twitter of M. Schrubbe
Blog of M. Schrubbe
Website of M. Schrubbe
On their campaign stickers and posters the candidates not only portray their picture and candidacy number but often also pictures and names of further candidates of coalition parties.
See, for example, the sticker of the candidate Marcelo Queiroz, number 25011: His picture and number is printed together with the picture and number of the opposition candidate for President of Brazil, José Serra, and also the candidate for Vice- President, Índio (da Costa), is mentioned:
Another IAF-alumnus Rafael Villabruna is today one of the two persons responsible for the Website and whole electronic campaign of the Democrats´s Senator Raimundo Colombo, who is running for Governor in the State of Santa Catarina in the south of Brazil. And the IAF-alumna Kaliana Kalache is responsible for the organization and realization of the whole electronic campaign of a candidate in the southern state of Paraná who is running for Governor.
Marcelo Puppi Finally I would like to give one more example: Marcelo Puppi, IAF-Alumnus and facilitator of the FNF seminars in Brazil since many years, is personal consulter of the candidate for Vice-President in Brazil, Índio da Costa, a young member of the Democrats who until recently was still a member of the “Juventude Democratas”.
As you can imagine, the FNF in Brazil is very proud of its successful partners who today occupy so important positions. We wish all of them good luck!
Birgit and I like to thank all the Brazilian IAF-Alumni who took part in our “Brazilian-Special” and we hope that the contributions find a lot of interest.
